For generations, Mangaluru’s Catholic community has built enduring institutions of faith, education, healthcare, and enterprise. Yet, a permanent community home created specifically for fellowship, family life, recreation, and connection across generations has remained missing.
On Monday, 10 August 2026, Founder Members, well-wishers, and community leaders gathered at the Goldfinch Hotel for an inaugural presentation and outreach evening to help build The Catholic Club.
A Vision Grounded in Heritage Conceived not merely as a recreational facility, but as a living community space for fellowship, celebration, sport, hospitality, and dialogue, the Club stands for dignity rather than display. The design brief reinterprets Indo-Portuguese, Goan, and coastal Mangalorean Catholic architecture—featuring sloping tiled roofs, deep verandahs, and laterite stone.
- The Club Crest: Represents regional roots and steadfastness, featuring the Anchor (hope), the Star of the Sea / Stella Maris (guidance), the Cross, and Arabian Sea waves.
- Proposed Phased Facilities: Multipurpose celebration halls, family dining serving traditional cuisine, sports facilities (swimming pool, badminton, indoor games), quiet member lounges, a library, and 21 guest rooms for visiting families. (Note: Facilities and final design remain subject to architectural planning, statutory approvals, feasibility, finances, and phased development.)
Key Milestones & The Proposed Site
- Society Registered: Formally registered under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act, 1960 on 4 June 2026 (Reg. No. DRDK/SOR/23/2026-27).
- Bishop’s Decree Received: Diocesan permission has been formally granted for the use of the word “Catholic” in the Club’s name.
- Our Proposed Permanent Home: A level ~1-acre parcel (44,384 sq. ft. / 4,123.40 sq. m) on Church Road, Valencia, minutes from Valencia Church with easy access toward NH 66.
- Preserving Nature & Roots: Architectural planning will seek to preserve the mature mango trees wherever reasonably possible and integrate the historic open well into the premises, subject to technical feasibility.
- Property Acquisition: An Agreement for Sale has been settled at ₹13.31 crore (part of the immediate ₹15.31 crore requirement for land acquisition, approvals, and registration), with completion targeted for December 2026.
Governance & Financial Stewardship
Under the leadership of the First Governing Body and Honorary President Mr. Ivan D’Souza, strict stewardship principles have been established:
- Governed and Accountable: Governed strictly by the registered Memorandum & Rules, with proper accounting, separate designated bank accounts at the Mangalore Catholic Co-operative Bank, and audited books.
- Refundable Application Deposits: Monies received during the property-acquisition stage (₹5.90 lakh, comprising the ₹5 lakh entrance fee plus applicable taxes) are held separately as Refundable Membership Application Deposits pending formal admission under the Rules.
- Voluntary Corpus Donations: Wholly separate from membership and do not confer priority, privilege, or admission.
- Early Support: Built on early confidence from prominent well-wishers and supporters, including Mr. H. R. T. Saldanha and philanthropist Mr. Michael D’Souza.
